V Press Fittings

What is V Press Fittings

V Press Fittings are one of the reasonable and reliable connection methods among the domestic thin-walled metal pipe connections. It is widely used in many system fields such as direct drinking water, tap water, cold and hot water, heating, gas, and fire sprinklers, etc.

Benefits of V Press Fittings

Quicker and cheaper

Perhaps the biggest advantage of using V press fittings is the fact that the system is completely flame free, there's no requirement to weld, braze or solder anything. Due to this, you're already saving time and money on training alone and while there is still a need for some training on the press tool, it is significantly less than other methods.Additionally, the ease of installation of press fittings means that projects can be completed in a fraction of the usual time.

Safer to use

Health and safety is a prime aspect of any plumbing job. The tools required for installing press fittings are less of a safety risk, as they don't require flames, heat or extra mechanical work to complete connections. Using the tool as removes the chance of any carbon deposits or flux being left behind on the job. There's also the added benefit of not requiring any permits or assessments be carried out and there's less mess to clean up, further reducing workplace hazards.

More accurate

Utilising these kinds of fittings can help improve accuracy of installs. With traditional methods, there's always the risk that the fitting could be left incomplete. Many hydraulic press tools will only shut off when the connection is complete and secure, removing the guesswork of whether a pipe is fully joined or not. There's no need to fear that press connections must sacrifice something in order to achieve these feats, every fitting is just as strong and reliable as their soldered or welded counterparts.

Versatility

Press fittings are available in copper, stainless steel and carbon steel, meaning they can easily be integrated into existing builds that utilise these materials, whether it's water, gas, corrosives or even steam. If the fitting was intended for use in that system, press fittings can quickly and easily be used to extend or repair. It's easy to see why press fittings are becoming the first choice for plumbers everywhere and has a range of copper, stainless steel and gas V press fittings so you can stay ahead of the game.

Ease of use

V press fittings are very easy to use, even for inexperienced plumbers. They require no special skills or tools, other than a press tool, which is widely available and relatively simple to operate.

V Press Fittings Applications

Chemical lines
Industrial facilities can benefit from the chemical resistance of stainless V press fittings. Depending on the brand and gauge of material, some stainless steel press fittings are approved for use in pipe systems that carry highly corrosive chemicals like nitric and phosphoric acids. Because press tools require no flame to create a secure connection, the potential hazard of exposing industrial chemicals to heat is eliminated.

Gas lines
V press fittings are well-suited for use in gas lines and compressed air systems. Depending on the type of gas, you can quickly install gas lines with stainless steel, carbon steel and copper press fittings. This can include natural gas lines for select types of carbon steel and stainless steel press fittings. When installed correctly with the appropriate sealing elements, press fittings yield an airtight pipe connection. This means you can assemble a virtually leak-free gas line in a fraction of the time it would take to weld or solder.

Hydronic heating and cooling systems
Investing in a press fitting system also pays off when it comes to hydronics. Select press fittings can be used in conjunction with chilled water and hydronic heat applications alike because of their chemical resistance to propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Various manufacturers produce press fittings in copper, stainless steel and carbon steel that are approved for use in hydronic heating and cooling applications. This allows you to customize a climate control solution based on your customers' needs.

Greywater lines
Copper and stainless steel press fittings that are approved for use in greywater applications are an excellent solution for constructing a secure drainage system. In addition to saving time when installing new greywater lines, press fittings are also advantageous when completing repairs. The reason for this is because press fitting connections can be completed in wet conditions, which allows you to perform repairs fast and minimize damage from leaky greywater.

Fuels, oil and lubricant lines
Keep industrial and mechanical operations running like well-oiled machines by using press fittings for pipe connections. From fuels like diesel, butane, kerosene and propane to petroleum-based lubricants and heating oils, a wide range of press fittings are safe for use with combustible substances. Be sure to check manufacturer specifications to find the best stainless steel, copper or carbon steel press fitting for the type of fuel or oil line.

Potable water systems
Whether in large-scale commercial applications or residential new construction building projects, V press fittings make it easier for contractors to install hot and cold potable water lines. You can even use select stainless steel press fittings in reverse osmosis drinking water systems, which provides on-demand filtered drinking water for your customers.

V Press Fittings Installation Guide

Cut the pipe
Use a pipe cutter to cut the tube square. Ensure the tube ends are clean and undamaged, as they will fit inside the press fitting.

Remove burrs
Use a deburring tool to remove any burrs or sharp edges from the internal and external ends of the tube. Wipe the tube ends clean to prevent damage to the sealing ring during insertion into the V press fittings.

Sealing ring seating and lubrication
Ensure the sealing ring is correctly seated, undamaged, and lubricated before inserting the tube. Use a small amount of water for lubrication if needed.

Mark the insertion depth
To achieve a perfect joint, insert the tube into the fitting until it reaches the tube stop (the point within a press fitting where the tube or pipe being inserted comes to a stop). Mark the tube's insertion depth to detect if there is any movement during subsequent pressing operations. Press the fitting only when the tube reaches the tube stop and the previously marked area realigns with the fitting.

Complete the joint
Select the appropriate-sized jaw for the press fitting and attach it securely to the pressing tool. Position the jaws squarely over the fitting. Depress the trigger or handle of the pressing tool to initiate the pressing process. Apply steady pressure until the jaws fully enclose the mouth of the fitting and the pressing tool indicates completion. Once the pressing cycle is complete, release the pressing tool from the fitting. Ensure the jaws disengage smoothly without disturbing the joint. Visually inspect the V press fittings joint to ensure it is properly formed, secure, and leak-free. Check for any signs of misalignment or damage.

BSP 90 Degree Female Thread Tee Fitting

Tools and materials:
Gather all necessary tools and materials before starting. You'll need PEX-B tubing, crimp fittings, a V press fittings, a pipe cutter, a deburring tool, and a measuring tape.
Cutting the PEX tubing:
Measure and mark the length of PEX tubing you need for your installation.
Use a PEX pipe cutter to make a clean, straight cut. Ensure the cut is perpendicular to the tubing to achieve a proper seal with the fitting.
Deburring:
After cutting, use a deburring tool to remove any burrs or sharp edges from the cut end. This ensures a smooth surface for the crimp ring and prevents damage to the O-ring inside the fitting.
Selecting the right fitting:
Ensure that you are using the correct size and type of V press fittings for your tubing. Match the fitting size to the diameter of the PEX tubing.
Inserting the fitting:
Slide the crimp fitting onto the cut end of the PEX tubing. Make sure the fitting is fully inserted, and there is no gap between the tubing and the fitting.

Positioning the crimp ring:
Place the crimp ring over the fitting, ensuring it is centered between the end of the tubing and the shoulder of the fitting. This ensures a proper seal.
Crimping process:
Position the PEX crimping tool over the crimp ring and squeeze the handles firmly. The tool will compress the crimp ring onto the fitting, creating a secure connection. Check the manufacturer's guidelines for the recommended crimping procedure.
Inspecting connections:
After crimping, visually inspect the connection to ensure that the crimp ring is evenly and securely in place. There should be no gaps or irregularities.
Pressure testing:
Consider pressure testing the PEX system before concealing it within walls or ceilings. This helps identify any potential leaks or issues before the installation is complete.
Follow local codes:
Always adhere to local plumbing codes and regulations. Different regions may have specific requirements for PEX installations.
Practice safety:
Use appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses, when cutting and working with PEX tubing.

Various types of V Press Fittings and connection systems

V press fittings
Crimp style fittings are the most common and affordable type of V press fittings and can be found in majority of supply houses, home improvement stores and online stores.
Brass V press fittings are manufactured to ASTM F1807 standard. Poly alloy V press fittings are manufactured to ASTM F2159 standard.
Both types are compatible with all types (A, B, C) and brands of PEX tubing and can be installed using either one of the following methods:
Crimp Method: requires a V press fittings Crimp Tool and Copper Crimp Rings (also made to ASTM F1807)
Clamp (Cinch) Method: requires a PEX Clamp (Cinch) Tool and Stainless Steel (Cinch) Clamps (made to ASTM F2098).

Push PEX fittings
Push-Fit or Push-To-Connect fittings are the only ones which do not require any PEX tools or rings to make a connection with tubing. A special composite mechanism securely locks and seals the pipe, preventing it from leaking or popping out of the fitting. Push fitting can be disconnected from the tubing with a help of a disconnecting clip or tool.
These fittings can be manufactured from brass or poly alloy and are compatible with all types of PEX as we all CPVC and copper piping.

Expansion PEX fittings
All expansion fittings can be divided into (2) major groups:
● Uponor (Wirsbo) ProPEX expansion system: proprietary style expansion fittings + expander tool + PEX sleeves. Both brass and poly fittings manufactured to ASTM F1960 standard.
Rehau RauPEX expansion system: proprietary style expansion fittings + expander tool + compression tool + brass sleeves. Fittings manufactured to ASTM F2080 standard.
Expansion style fittings can be used only with PEX-A tubing and are not compatible with other PEX tubing types.

Compression PEX-AL-PEX fittings
Unlike most other methods, PEX-AL-PEX connection method does not require a PEX tool. Design of the compression fitting incorporates a split O-ring and a nut, used to tighten over the PEX-AL-PEX pipe and secure it over the fitting. PEX-AL-PEX compression fittings can be identified by (2) rubber O-rings over the fitting’s barbs.

Press PEX fittings
Viega PEX Press fittings are installed using a PEX press tool and have press sleeves already pre-installed onto the fitting for ease of installation. They work with all Viega PEX tubing (including FostaPEX), as well as all other brands and types (A, B, C).
Watts and Uponor press fittings are designed for use only with PEX-AL-PEX tubing (any brand).

Asked Question

Q: Can you use M Press Jaws on V press fittings?

A: Only fully compatible jaws should be used. For example, are installed using jaws with a B or V profile. Jaws with an M profile should NOT be used with these fittings.

Q: What is the difference between M and V press?

A: The process of connecting and installing V profile and M profile is basically the same, but we must pay more attention when installing and using them, so as to avoid connection errors and affect our normal use. Simply put, the M profile presses one side of the sealing ring, and the V profile presses both sides.

Q: How reliable are press fittings?

A: The connectors contain sealing elements that, when pressed, create an even and reliable connection. Press fittings can be used in most locations, including underground and under slabs.

Q: Which press fittings are best?

A: One of the best innovations in plumbing technology is the U profile press fitting. These fittings have become increasingly popular because they provide a fast and reliable way to join pipes without the need for soldering or threading.

Q: Can you reuse press fittings?

A: If the fittings appear to be in good condition, they can be reused, but it's always a good idea to use new fittings for critical connections to ensure a reliable seal.

Q: Why do you mark press fittings?

A: Measuring and marking will allow for dry fitting the system with visual cues to note proper insertion before crimping joints. This allows for correction due to pipe movement.

Q: Are press fittings permanent?

A: Once pressed, they are permanent and designed to outlast the fitting they are installed with, in most applications. Check out our full guide to the difference between O-rings and sealing elements here.

Q: How long have press fittings been out?

A: The press-connect joining method (sometimes called press-fit) was patented in Europe in the late 1950s and continues to be used successfully there. The method and associated fittings and tools were introduced in the United States in the late 1990s.

Q: Is press-fit better than push fit?

A: Push fit technology has been designed to optimise time efficiency and to help ensure installers are able to work across jobs more effectively. Unlike press fit methods, push fit fittings require no additional tools for installation.

Q: Are press fittings the same as compression fittings?

A: Unlike press fittings, compression fittings do not require extra equipment for installation. Once cutting, measuring and flaring of the pipes has been done, the actual jointing requires few seconds.

Q: Can press fittings be used on gas?

A: Aqua gas press fittings are suitable for both drinking water and gas systems – a versatile solution for a variety of installations! Our press fitting range can be used for sanitary, heating, gas, compressed air, industrial, and other applications, with dimensions ranging from 15 to 54 mm.

Q: Are there different types of press fittings?

A: When talking with plumbing installers, one of the most frequent topics is their preference for either the "M" or "V" pressfitting profile. The choice of one or the other is often a matter of "habit". Professionals who are used to a certain profile rarely choose to change to the other.

Q: What is the diameter difference for a press fit?

A: The acceptable press fit for most metals (steel, brass, and aluminum) is between . 0005” and . 002”. In production assembly, the acceptable press fit is the sum of the tolerances for the pin and the hole.

Q: Can you use push fittings on a shower?

A: Yes, you can use push-fit plumbing except for the final connection onto the shower inlet, which must be a 15mm compression fitting to ensure a watertight connection.

Q: Do professional plumbers use compression fittings?

A: Absolutely. Compression fittings have stood the test of time. They are a proven and reliable method for connecting pipes, particularly in applications where it's not practical or possible to solder the pipes together. They're commonly used in both domestic and commercial plumbing installations.
