Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is a Sino-foreign cooperative university with an independent legal personality approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and founded by Wuhan University (China) and Duke University (U.S.), and is a member of the Alliance of Sino-foreign Cooperative Universities (ACCU) and the China Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CCUGH).
In January 2010, Duke University and Kunshan Municipal People's Government signed a cooperation agreement to establish Duke Kunshan University; in January 2011, Duke University and Wuhan University cooperated to establish Duke Kunshan University; on August 17, 2012, the Ministry of Education issued a letter formally approving the application for the establishment of Duke Kunshan University (Preparatory Committee), which was officially inaugurated in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, China, on December 19th; on September 17, 2013, the Ministry of Education formally approved the application for the establishment of Duke Kunshan University (Preparatory Committee). On September 17, 2013, the Ministry of Education officially approved the cooperation between Wuhan University and Duke University to establish Duke Kunshan University.

The Phase II campus of Duke Kunshan University officially started on-site construction in January 2020, and in August 2023, the Phase II campus was officially opened and put into use.
The Phase II campus is connected to the in-use Phase I campus in the west and the planned Phase III campus in the east, with a total site area of about 190,000 square meters from ChuanYe Road in the north and Duke Avenue in the south, and a total floor area of 153,000 square meters, including 36,000 square meters of underground floor area. Upon completion of the Phase II campus, the total campus floor area will be more than three times that of the original Phase I campus.
With 22 new buildings, including a library, a community center, the WU-Duke Research Institute, an administration building, a gymnasium complex, undergraduate apartments, a graduate student center and a staff center, including 26 new classrooms and 22 new laboratories, Phase II campus is equipped with state-of-the-art global research, teaching, and athletic and recreational facilities. In addition, Duke Kunshan University is the only Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) overall certified campus in China.
